If you are a fan of discounts and offers, you surely know Singles’ Day, the alternative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It is a day, more precisely on 11 November, in which almost all shops, in all sectors and all over the world, offer unmissable discounts.
Not everyone knows, however, that this day was born in China as opposed to Valentine’s Day.
Singles’ Day – An important day for commerce
Singles’ Day was launched in 1993 at Nanjing University by a group of students who resisted the social pressure of society to marry quickly. They decided to organise a party for singles – something like Valentine’s Day, but without a partner. The Singles’ Day celebrations spread to other universities in Nanjing in the 1990s.
Soon, November 11th became the celebration of all singles, and the date was not chosen at random! The numerical transcription of the date (11/11), in fact, consists of four “1”. According to Chinese tradition, the number 1 is a representation of a tree without leaves, a symbol associated with the idea of a person without a partner. There is also another theory, namely that the four “1s” represent the four friends who started this “celebration”. Today, Singles’ Day is an important day in China and society cannot be imagined without it.
It was in 2009 when the Alibaba online-shop had the great idea to add a commercial factor to this traditional Chinese day. In that year the company, which is one of the most influential e-commerce platforms in the world, offered extensive discounts. Thus, the most important sales event in China was born and is developing into a worldwide phenomenon with great success. In 2015, some 232 countries have already taken part.
Today, Singles’ Day is in first place among the days dedicated to shopping, as it triples the turnover achieved by the United States and Europe together during Black Friday.
