Oscars Party Cocktails

It’s that time of year again when the stars come out to shine in their most dazzling outfits, sip champagne at decadent gala dinners and perfect their overdramatic acceptance speeches. Yep, you guessed it, it’s time for the Oscars. To celebrate in true Drinks&Co style, we’ve put together a compilation of 8 award-winning Oscar party cocktails inspired by this year’s nominees for Best Picture. So read on to find ideas for some movie-inspired cocktails, then fix yourself a little drink and feel like a star for the night.  So without further ado: lights, camera, action!

1. Sound of Metal

For Sound of Metal, a moving drama revolving around a Metal drummer’s battle with hearing loss, we had to pick a cocktail using Blackened American, an American whiskey made in collaboration with award-winning metal band Metallica. This one of a kind whiskey was matured using “Black noise”. This proprietary process involves playing a special playlist chosen by the band while the whiskey ages. The music’s vibrations cause the whisky to move, picking up more spice and character from the barrel in the process. There are loads of whisky cocktails out there, but we thought Blackened American would pair best with a classic Old Fashioned.

Old Fashioned

Ingredients:

How to Make an Old Fashioned:

  1. Mix the sugar, bitters and water in a small tumbler.
  2. Then add ice and stir in the whisky.
  3. Mix in a splash of soda water if you like.
  4. Garnish with a slice of orange or a twist of orange peel.

2. Minari

This next film relates the various dramas of a Korean immigrant family who move from California to Arkansas where they hope to grow Korean produce to sell to US vendors. One of these plants which plays a major role in the film is minari, also known as water celery. So what better choice for the second of our Oscar party cocktails than a Celery Gimlet?!

Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah is a biographical drama about the betrayal of Fred Hamptom, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s. Just like the film, deception is at the heart of this next cocktail. It may look like an innocent lemonade, but don’t let looks deceive you. This citrus cocktail packs a mighty punch.

 Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman is a comedy-thriller depicting a woman’s quest for justice following the rape and death of her best friend. Following her friend’s death, the protagonist spends her free time feigning drunkenness in clubs, allowing men to take her home and revealing her sobriety when they try to take advantage of her, before exacting her revenge. For this film directed by Emerald Fennel, we’ve chosen the classic party cocktail Sex on the Beach’s, non-alcoholic sister: Cuddles on the Beach. This mocktail looks identical and has the same great fruity flavour as Sex on the Beach but without a single drop of alcohol.  Not that anyone would ever tell!

Cuddles on the Beach

Ingredients:

  • 90 ml cranberry juice
  • 90 ml grapefruit juice
  • 60 ml peach nectar

How to Make Cuddles on the Beach:

  1. Fill a glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour in each ingredient, stir and serve.
  3. Garnish with a slice of peach.

  • 10 ml Lemon Juice
  • 1 whole sugar cube (white)
  • Ice cubes

The Trial of the Chicago 7

One of the first scenes in Aaron Sorkin’s film shows Jerry Rubin teaching protesters how to make a Molotov cocktail to use as a weapon. So it only makes sense to choose the drink of the same name to accompany The Trial of the Chicago 7. The four ingredients symbolise the ingredients used in the Molotov cocktail weapon.: Vodka = alcohol, parfait amour = paraffin (because of it’s purple hue), lemon juice = petrol, black sambuca = tar. Drink with caution, this dark and dangerous drink is strong!

Molotov Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 45 ml vodka
  • 37.5 ml parfait amour liqueur
  • 15 ml black sambuca
  • 15 ml freshly squeezed lemon juice

How to make a Molotov cocktail:

  1. Shake all ingredients together with ice.
  2. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Garnish with a lemon twist.
