3 things to consider while drinking wine in high altitude

We’ve all had to travel by plane, and to do so without the possibility to enjoy a delicious glass of wine can make it a more stressful and less fun trip. Luckily, there are people like Andrea Robinson, one of 23 women who have the degree of Master Sommelier in the world. She has, with her experience, given us easy tips to choose the best wines while we are in the air.

1. Pay attention to the temperature

It is a basic and very important aspect when serving wine. Generally, there is the notion that the ideal is to serve the drink at room temperature. However, this paradigm does not work on the plane. On the heights, due to pressure and other aspects, taste buds can be affected and therefore the enjoyment of wine. Always ask them to give you a wine that is cooled to avoid any problems.

2. Keep in mind the acidity

“The low pressure in the air disables your sense to smell flavors. In addition, the dryness prevents you from feeling flavors and even textures,” says Robinson. That is why, at high altitudes, it is best to choose a softer wine instead of a very strong or acidic because, in these circumstances, these wines tend to take a much more bitter and sour taste than normal.

3. Combination with food

Another misconception that wine drinkers often have is that red meat should be paired with red wine, while white meat with white wine. Although it is partially true, it is much more important to pay attention to how the meat is prepared. For example, if it is a lemon chicken dish, a white wine would be nice, however, if the same type of meat is served on a base of legumes or fungi, then a red wine will be the best option. Everything has to do with consistency, sauces and side dishes. Do not only focus on the protein which the dish is based on.
