India Pale Ale beer, also popularly known as IPA, is a very special type of ale. It is a beer with a paler colour and is made with a larger amount of hops, so its alcohol content is higher.
History of India Pale Ale
The origin of this beer was, little less than a coincidence. At the beginning of the Eighteenth-Century, Great Britain had colonies distributed by all the world. Thus, the British who travelled to them were in great trouble, since beer became sour because of the warm climates and the long journeys.
One of the main British colonies was India. There were sent bottles of porter beer, the favourite of the British at the time. However, most bottles became mouldy and sour.
Thus, George Hodgson, in the year 1790 began to elaborate and send the India Pale Ale beer; it was called that because it had a paler colour than Porter beer and, moreover, it was lighter. It was a very bitter beer, with a high content of hops and very foamy. But it was able to endure travel and get to India intact.
The idea of Hodgson became a great success in a very short time; The shipments of beer to India from Britain increased by almost 8,000 barrels in a few years. Breweries like Salt or Bass soon copied the recipe of Hodgson; even in the United States, some breweries began to make this type of beer.
Little by little, India Pale Ale beer also became very popular in the West. Currently, most of the breweries specialized in this beverage are based in Brazil and the United States; it is estimated that there are about 1,500 in total. The first IPA beer in the United States was made by the White Bay Brewing Company.
India Pale Ale is a beer made for the true lovers of this drink and for those who like strong flavours.
