Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2011

TASTING NOTES:

  • View: Deeply luscious garnet.
  • Nose: A complex aroma of smokey umami smells that simmer with rich notes of olive oil, sage, and thyme. Oaky fruit lifts the broody scents up to enlightened the drinkers' sensation.
  • Mouth: A full-bodied, structured wine that immediately makes its quality known. Red berries such as redcurrants, ripe, cooked cherries bring about defined notes that balance with eucalyptus and aged spice. A pronounced, balanced tannin helps to produce a long-lasting finish that lets you savour every sip and makes for ideal pairing with other dishes.

APPELLATION: Barossa Valley

VINEYARD: Penfolds is an established vineyard in the winelands of Southern Australia. An applauded wine that is listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.

GRAPES: 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon

AGEING: The wine is aged in new American oak hogshead for 20 months. For a grange, this wine is quite young, but doesn't sacrifice this shorter ageing process for a quality palate.

PREPARATION: A multi-regional blend of Shiraz grapes. They are left to ripen at full maturity and flavour potential before harvesting.

PAIRING: This high quality wine deserves to be paired with a high quality meal. Veal and olive-oil roasted vegetables will make a decedent dinner pairing. Matured cheeses with strong flavours will complement the body of the wine while adding tart fruit jellies will help to bring out the tannin.

RECOMMENDED SERVING TEMPERATURE: 16-20°C

ALCOHOL: 14.5%

Captivating, alluring red wine in magenta colors. Berry-spicy bouquet of red berries, licorice, anise and pepper. On the palate, very strong, notes of mocha, dark chocolate, dried figs and juicy plums. Aged in new oak balanced with strong tannins. A wine of the century.

Opaque red. Aromas of cherry, licorice. A taste of nothing in particular just wine.
A red that showed his face with food.
I went with work colleagues to Penfolds Wines and we tried it  there.
