Domenico Clerico Barolo 2016 (Nebbiolo)


View: Intense red. Nose: Aromas of cherries and violets, fragrant woods, a touch of tobacco and leather.Mouth: Full-bodied, with ripe, chewy tannins and a long, savoury finish. Very structured, with lots of ripe tannins and ripe fruit enveloping the phenolics. Solid and real.

DENOMINATION: Barolo (Italy).

WINERY: Domenico Clerico.

GRAPES: Nebbiolo.

AGEING: 24 months.

WINEMAKING: 15-20 days short maceration in new and old barrels before transferring to 5000-litre barrels for ageing. Silky tannins, bright acidity and remarkable length, especially for an ordinary Barolo.

PAIRINGS: This wine is ideal for drinking as a preferred accompaniment to red meat and medium-aged cheeses.

In 1976 Domenico Clerico, at his father's request, chose to take over the reins of the family farm, which at the time extended over an area of ​​about five hectares, and produced grapes to be given to the nearby social winery. However, the small profits, Domenico, assisted by his wife Giuliana in the management of the estate, decided to start vinifying their grapes to produce quality wines. With love and dedication he began to take care of his vines, trying to interpret every minimum need at any time of the year. At the same time Domenico bought new vineyards, well positioned and characterized by optimal microclimatic characteristics. Today the winery of Domenico Clerico has 21 hectares of vineyards, located in some of the best sub-areas of the Barolo of Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba

Winery Domenico Clerico

In 1976 Domenico Clerico took over the company from his father together with his wife Giuliana. The company had 4.5 hectares of vineyards located in the most beautiful places in the Barolo area in Piemonte. Domenico now has 21 ha of vineyard in the Barolo area in Montforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba. No insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. He likes to bring out single vineyard wines, because in his opinion they best reflect the terroir. His wines are usually rich, aromatic and relatively easy to approach even young. All in all, a producer who is highly acclaimed internationally for going to great lengths to create quality wines that are in balance and for constantly reviewing his methods in search of perfection.

Domenico Clerico Barolo

This beautiful Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The Ginestra vineyard (4ha) is located in the heart of the Barolo. The sticks were planted around 1985. In the vineyard, the work is done entirely by hand. In October, the grapes are carefully selected and picked by hand. After a gentle pressing, they undergo the fermentation process on the skin for a period of 15 to 20 days. The further maturation of the wine takes place partly for a period of 24 months in Slovenian oak barrels and partly for a period of 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new and 60% previously used. After this, the wine is blended and bottled. In the cellars of the domain, the wine remains in the bottle for a number of months before it is marketed.

The Dominico Clerico Barolo has an intense ruby red color with, on the nose, elegant, complex scents of tobacco, black cherries, espresso, raspberry, liquorice and spices. The taste is full, powerful and harmonious due to the sweetness of the tannins. The aftertaste is powerful and long lasting.

The winery of Domenico Clerico was founded in 1978 in Monforte d'Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, when he inherited from his father a 3 hectare vineyard and a small farm, which until then had been limited to cultivate vines and fruit trees.

Domenico loves his land and aware of its enormous potential. He decides that he will produce the wine and began buying vineyards in the best crus of the area cultivated with Nebbiolo. Listen to the advice of the old men, who have spent a lifetime in between the rows, and look for land to be placed between 150 and 450 meters above sea level, with a south-west exposure, because the experience from generation to generation teaches that those are the best conditions to get good grapes. So in 1977 he purchased a small vineyard in the heart of Bussia, then another 83 in the cru Ginestra, and in '95 the third cru vineyard in the Mosconi.

The wines are Barolo overtime, all different, that accurately reflect the characteristics of the terroir from which they come. An example is the Ciabot Mentin, the Pajana, the Percristina and Aeroplanservaj. A lot of effort, a lot of work in the vineyard and in the cellar and an unwavering enthusiasm in wanting to get better and better, lead the cellar of Domenico Clerico to impose its fantastic wines in the world.

Vineyards: Vines of average age 30 years in Monforte.

Vinification: Maceration on the skins in rotor fermentor for 15-20 days.

Aging: 24 months in French barriques and in big oak barrels.

Philosophy of production: Indigenous yeasts, Independent Winegrowners.

Colour: Garnet red.
Scent: Rich and fruity, with hints of jam, cocoa, mint and balsamic herbs.
Taste: Clear and powerful, austere and finely tannic.
