The Abona denomination of origin spans about 2,000 hectares, spread across a stretch of land that runs along the coast, with an altitude that ranges from 200 to 1,600 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest vineyards in Europe. The vineyards are extend over the counties of Adeje, Arona, Vilaflor, San Miguel, Granadilla, Arico and Fasnia.
The best Abona DO cultivars are over 600 meters high, with plants that thrive on dark volcanic soil, which is fertile and permeable. Its intermediate area is occupied by volcanic sands, which give the wines aninteresting personality, with notes of ash and rubber.
The main strains of the Abona DO are Listán Blanca and Listán Red,and it shares them with the new Valle de Güímar denomination of origin.
